TRUTH, HONESTY AND SIMPLICITY OF FORMER MINISTER KAKKAN:
So many leaders may come. But History will keep in memory only very few leaders. F
ormer Minister Kakkan is one among those renowned leaders recorded in the History. Reason for his fame and the everlasting respect to him, even after so many years, is his humble nature. He is not only lived as an ordinary man but also as a man of action.
Amidst poverty, he struggled in his school studies and worked in a farm lands. After one year, he continued his studies and joined in the Congress Party in his school age itself. He joined in the Freedom Struggle of ‘Vellaiyane Veliyeru’, went to jail and underwent many atrocities in the jail.
When the Constitutional Committee was commenced, he worked as a member in it. After Rajaji vacated his Post, Kamarajar held the post of Chief Minister. After that, Kakkan became Leader of Tamilnadu Congress Party.
In 1957, he became a member of the Assembly and became a Minister in the Cabinet of Kamarajar, for the portfolio of Public Works Dept., Welfare of Scheduled Caste and Tribal Welfare Department . During his period, dams of Mettur and Vaigai were built. ‘ Harijana Seva Sangam’ was formulated for the upliftment of the Dalith people. 2 Agricultural Universities were commenced. He opened thousands of schools under the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department. He helped to form Housing Board for them.
He admitted his son only in the Corporation School, even though he was a Minister. He held many responsibilities of the Govt. but lived a life of honesty. When he was affected by arthritis, he was admitted to the private hospital. But unable to bear the hospital charges, he went to the Govt. hospital for treatment.
Till the end of his life, he lived in a hut and in poverty; but he did wonderful good deeds for the welfare of the people. So, he is still remembered as a rare person.
